Thirty-three (33) years. One firm. An entire career spent at the intersection of policy, business, and people.
Few professionals in Africa’s tax landscape can claim the kind of institutional depth that Adewale Ajayi has accumulated over more than three decades at a single firm.
As Partner and Head of Tax, Regulatory and People Services at KPMG Nigeria and KPMG Africa Head of Tax, Ajayi occupies one of the most influential seats in African taxation. In an era of constant career movement, his three-decade journey stands out as a rare example of enduring leadership and institutional loyalty.
Since joining in 1992, he has grown from a young professional with ambition into one of the leading tax minds on the African continent.
The Man Behind the Mandate
Ajayi leads KPMG’s Tax, Regulatory, and People Services practice in Nigeria while simultaneously serving as Head of Tax for Africa. He advises on tax, cross-border transactions, regulatory compliance, employee rewards, and immigration, supporting Nigeria’s largest companies and multinational firms in navigating one of Africa’s most complex business environments.
But what distinguishes Wale is not just the breadth of his practice. It is his instinct for translating complexity into practical, actionable counsel for the clients and institutions that depend on him.
He has served as the tax engagement partner on most of KPMG’s energy clients, providing tax advisory, compliance, and regulatory services to both national and international companies in the sector. He has acted as an expert witness in oil and gas disputes and led capacity-building engagements with the Federal Inland Revenue Service, helping strengthen institutional capabilities in tax administration.
Influence Beyond Client Work
Ajayi has been actively involved in technical committees reviewing Nigerian tax legislation, shaping the very laws that govern business operations. He played a key role in the enactment of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, a landmark reform that took twenty years to achieve. For two decades, through changing governments, shifting energy markets, and intense industry negotiations, he remained in the room, providing counsel and technical expertise that helped bring one of Nigeria’s most significant pieces of legislation to life.
A Voice the Nation Listens To
He is not a behind-the-scenes operator. Ajayi is a regular analyst on Arise TV, Channels TV, AIT, and News Central, offering commentary on tax, finance, and the Nigerian economy. He has published widely in international journals, including Bloomberg Tax, Tax Notes International, the International Energy Law and Taxation Review, and the Tax Planning International Review. He has spoken at professional and national platforms on fiscal policy, regulatory reforms, and compensation matters.

Three Decades, One Home
Reflecting on his journey, He once described KPMG in terms that say everything about why he stayed:
“Joining KPMG has really transformed my life, personally and professionally. I have always dreamt of working in an environment where I can make a meaningful and positive difference in people and the community.”
He describes KPMG as the place where his ambition found its fullest expression, not just in the complexity of the work, but in the people. He is known as a passionate mentor, working actively with professionals within and outside the firm to help them, in his words, “become a better version of themselves.”
Before KPMG, Ajayi spent two years as an Audit Senior at Ernst & Young Nigeria, gaining the financial expertise that would guide his career in tax.
What Drives Him
Beyond the deals, legislation, and media appearances, He is driven by a simple philosophy: do work that matters.
“My ambition has been to do work that matters to me and which will enable me to create opportunity in a world that is becoming increasingly complex every day,” he says.
In a field as technically demanding as taxation, that kind of purpose-led approach is rare. It may explain his three-decade tenure at KPMG.
