Albert Larweh Asante is one of the few finance leaders who combine deep technical expertise with pan-African operational insight seamlessly in Ghana’s banking sector.

As Chief Finance Officer and Executive Director of Standard Chartered Ghana, Asante has emerged as a pivotal figure steering the bank’s financial strategy, risk management, and sustainable growth in one of the region’s most dynamic markets.

The recipient of the Top 50 Africa CFO of the Year at the defunct 2025 edition of CFO and Public Finance Conference and Awards (now Africa Finance Festival) is our TheCFO Magazine’s CFO of the Week

A Pan-African Finance Odyssey

Albert Larweh Asante’s journey with Standard Chartered spans nearly two decades, marked by an impressive ascent across multiple markets. Having begun his career in Ghana with roles in payments, reconciliations, and management reporting, he quickly demonstrated a keen ability to translate complex financial data into strategic insights.

His career took a significant regional leap when he moved to Angola, where he served as Financial Controller, Interim Chief Financial Officer, and eventually Chief Finance Officer and Executive Director. In these roles, he oversaw robust financial controls, balance sheet management, regulatory engagement, and performance optimisation during critical periods of transformation.

Returning to West Africa as Cluster Head of Finance for Corporate, Commercial and Institutional Banking (CCIB) across Ghana, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Gambia, and Sierra Leone, Asante honed his ability to drive performance at a multi-market level — managing capital efficiency, liquidity, and stakeholder relationships with remarkable dexterity.

Architect of Financial Resilience and Growth

In his current role as CFO and Executive Director of Standard Chartered Ghana, Asante brings this rich experience to bear on one of the bank’s key markets. He is responsible for shaping financial strategy, strengthening risk management frameworks, and ensuring the bank maintains a healthy balance sheet while supporting business growth.

His leadership emphasises not just compliance and control, but proactive value creation — partnering closely with business units to optimise profitability, enhance capital allocation, and navigate the complexities of a listed entity on the Ghana Stock Exchange.

Asante’s approach is defined by a rare blend of strategic foresight and operational discipline. Whether streamlining financial processes, bolstering governance structures, or championing data-driven decision-making, he consistently positions the bank to thrive amid economic shifts and regulatory evolution.

Beyond Numbers: Leadership and Legacy

Beyond his core finance mandate, Asante serves as a Non-Executive Director at Standard Chartered Wealth Management Limited (Ghana) and as a Board Trustee for the Standard Chartered Kenneth Dadzie Memorial and Science Education Endowment Funds. These roles reflect a commitment to broader institutional governance and societal impact, values that permeate his leadership philosophy.

A respected voice in financial leadership across Africa, Albert Larweh Asante continues to exemplify the modern CFO: part strategist, part guardian of integrity, and part visionary builder of sustainable institutions. In an era where financial leadership demands both precision and perspective, Asante stands out as a steady hand guiding Standard Chartered Ghana toward enduring success.
