The National Revenue Service (NRS) has reiterated its dedication to enhancing voluntary tax compliance, exactly one year after the rollout of Nigeria’s landmark tax reforms.

The revenue agency pledged collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) during the maiden edition of the 2026 National Tax Awareness Day, an event designed to evaluate progress since President Bola Tinubu signed the tax reform bills into law.

In a statement, the NRS highlighted that the nationwide campaign focused on taxpayer education, promoting voluntary compliance, and improving public understanding of Nigeria’s tax laws. The initiative was observed through CITN’s 49 District Societies across Nigeria’s 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and international chapters in the United Kingdom and North America.

The 2026 National Tax Awareness Day, themed “Tax Awareness for National Growth: Reform, Compliance and Shared Prosperity,” brought together tax professionals, government officials, businesses, students, community groups, and the general public.

Activities included tax awareness roadshows, market sensitisation campaigns, media engagements, tax clinics, stakeholder forums, school competitions, and community outreach programmes aimed at boosting tax literacy nationwide.

A key highlight was a courtesy visit by the President and Chairman of the CITN Council, Innocent Ohagwa, and members of the institute’s Governing Council to the NRS headquarters in Abuja. The delegation was received by the Executive Director of Finance and Corporate Services, Mohammed Abubakar, who represented NRS Executive Chairman Dr. Zacch Adedeji.

During the meeting, both institutions reviewed the progress of the tax reforms and renewed their commitment to taxpayer education and national development.

Abubakar commended CITN for institutionalising the National Tax Awareness Day and mobilising its networks to advance tax education.
“Tax awareness is the foundation of voluntary compliance, and voluntary compliance remains essential to building a sustainable tax system that supports national growth and shared prosperity,” he said.

He added that the ongoing reforms aim to create a tax administration system that is “trusted, transparent, technology-driven and responsive to the needs of taxpayers,” while making compliance simpler and more convenient.

In his remarks, Innocent Ohagwa thanked the NRS for its sustained collaboration on tax administration reforms. He described the National Tax Awareness Day as “a coordinated nationwide effort to deepen tax awareness, strengthen taxpayer education, and support the successful implementation of Nigeria’s tax reform agenda.”

Ohagwa also praised the NRS for technology-driven initiatives, particularly the recently launched Rev360 platform, which he said marks a major step toward greater efficiency, transparency, and improved taxpayer experience.
