MTN Rwanda Appoints John Bugunya as new CFO

MTN Rwanda has announced the appointment of John Bugunya as its new Chief Financial Officer, bringing on board a highly experienced finance professional with over two decades of leadership across banking, insurance, manufacturing, and strategic financial management.

In a statement shared on its LinkedIn page, MTN Rwanda expressed confidence in Bugunya’s ability to drive the company’s next phase of growth.

“We’re proud to welcome John Bugunya, FCCA, CPA as MTN Rwanda’s Chief Financial Officer. John brings more than 20 years of executive leadership experience across finance, strategy, governance, and business transformation. His wealth of expertise will be instrumental as we continue to accelerate growth, strengthen governance, and create sustainable value for our stakeholders,” the statement read.

Extensive Pan-African Expertise

Bugunya joins MTN Rwanda with an impressive track record. Most recently, he served as Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer at CIMERWA PPC, Rwanda’s leading cement manufacturer, where he played a key role in strategy development, financial performance management, risk oversight, and business transformation. Under his leadership, the company achieved notable milestones, including record revenues and profitability.

Prior to CIMERWA, Bugunya held the position of Chief Executive Officer at Prime Insurance Limited, where he focused on corporate governance, business strategy, reinsurance, and risk management. He also served as Chief Financial Officer at Bank of Kigali Limited, one of Rwanda’s largest banks.

In that role, he was instrumental in designing financial strategies that enhanced efficiency, profitability, and liquidity. He also led critical initiatives including the bank’s successful Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the Rwanda Stock Exchange in 2011.

Bugunya’s international experience includes senior audit roles at Deloitte in the United Kingdom and EY in Uganda, where he managed complex audit assignments across multiple sectors, including financial services, banking, insurance, and manufacturing.
