Over the years, he has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most respected investor relations professionals, building a reputation for strategic clarity, market intelligence, and stakeholder engagement that has significantly strengthened investor confidence in MTN Nigeria, one of Africa’s most influential corporate brands.

Few professionals exemplify this evolution as powerfully as Chimaobi Nwaokoma, Senior Manager of Investor Relations at MTN Nigeria, whose exceptional expertise, leadership, and impact have earned him the prestigious Investor Relations Personality of the Year award at the 6th Africa Finance Festival Awards 2026.

From Banking Strategy Rooms to Africa’s Biggest Telecom Stage

For more than two decades, Nwaokoma has built a reputation at the intersection of finance, corporate strategy, capital markets, and stakeholder communication. Since joining MTN Nigeria in 2018 as Senior Manager of Investor Relations, he has played a central role in strengthening investor confidence, deepening stakeholder engagement, and positioning the telecom operator as one of the most transparent and investor-friendly companies on the Nigerian Exchange.

His responsibilities go far beyond earnings presentations and quarterly disclosures. At MTN Nigeria, he engages the global investor community, facilitates capital-raising activities, and drives strategic investor relations initiatives designed to maximize shareholder value. Under his leadership, investor communication has evolved into a proactive business function that aligns market perception with long-term corporate strategy.

Before MTN Nigeria, Nwaokoma spent over eight years at Sterling Bank Plc, where he held several strategic leadership positions including Head of Investor Relations & Performance Insight, Head of Brand Management & Communications, and Investor Relations & Strategy Analyst. There, he built extensive experience managing earnings communication, investor roadshows, strategic business retreats, valuation models, corporate performance frameworks, and stakeholder engagement across Nigeria’s highly competitive banking industry.

His career foundation was established earlier at Spring Bank Plc and ACB International Bank Plc, where he gained hands-on expertise in corporate finance, product development, strategic execution, treasury operations, feasibility studies, and capital market transactions. The breadth of his experience has given him a uniquely balanced understanding of finance from both operational and market-facing perspectives.

Why AFF 2026 Named Him Investor Relations Personality of the Year

At AFF 2026, the Investor Relations Personality of the Year recognition reflected not only his technical competence, but also his influence in elevating investor relations as a strategic growth function within African corporations.

The recognition was part of a dominant outing for MTN Nigeria at the awards, where the company secured multiple honours including Best Firm in Investor Relations, Excellence in Tax Compliance, and Finance Team of the Year. The telecom giant’s Chief Financial Officer, Modupe Kadri, was also celebrated as Africa Transformational CFO of the Year and named among Africa’s Top 50 CFOs.

Yet behind the awards and institutional accolades lies the story of a finance communications strategist whose influence has quietly transformed how one of Africa’s largest listed companies engages shareholders, analysts, institutional investors, and the broader capital market community.

Commenting on the recognition, Akin Naphtal, Group CEO, InstinctWave and Group Publisher of TheCFO magazine described Nwaokoma as one of the continent’s most influential voices in investor engagement and strategic finance communication.

“Chimaobi Nwaokoma represents the modern face of investor relations in Africa – strategic, intelligent, transparent, and deeply aligned with enterprise value creation,” Naphtal said. “What distinguishes him is his ability to bridge finance and communication in a way that strengthens market confidence and institutional credibility. His recognition at the Africa Finance Festival Awards is not only well deserved, but reflective of the growing importance of investor relations leadership in shaping Africa’s corporate future.”
